What is anodising?
Fundamentally anodising is a finishing process of aluminium which enhances its decorative, durability, and corrosion-resistant properties.
In technical terms it is an electrolytic passivation process which is used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer which is formed on the surface of aluminium.
Unlike other finishing treatments such as powder coating or plating, the aluminium oxide formed from anodising is embedded with the underlying aluminium, as opposed to being applied on top of the aluminium's surface like those mentioned above. This means that the anodised layer cannot be chipped like other surface treatments, giving great durability.
The thickness of aluminium oxide created is tightly controlled through the process in order to meet customer requirements. Generally speaking most anodisers offer thicknesses from 5-25 microns, along with the ability for 'flash' or 'shot' anodising at around 2-3 microns.

The anodising process is a safe process that is not harmful to human health. Coupled with the face that anodising does not use heavy metals and is simply enhancing and reinforcing an already natural occurring oxide layer on the aluminium, the process is non-hazardous and produces no harmful toxins or waste as a result.

What about alloy types and anodising?
In general, alloy series 1000-7000 provide the best corrosion resistance couple with aesthetics. Snelsons mainly process 6000 series alloys which are known as some of the best alloys for anodising. For bright anodising, we recommend 6463 Bright Trim alloy due to its properties and characteristics which ensure the best surface finish when bright anodising. However alloy selection should be chosen to match not just finishing requirements but also strength and performance requirements and therefore alloy choice is best discussed on a case-by-case basis to ensure the best overall alloy is chosen for the project. Snelsons is proud to announce that as part of our commitment to reduce our Carbon Footprint and source more of our energy from green sources, we have completed a commercial agreement for the purchase of Solar Panels for our factory roofs.
The first stage planned for installation consists 120 x 250W Panels which will allow Snelsons to generate a constant source of energy all year round.
This follows our recent upgrades to various plant and machinery in order to make them more energy efficient, along with the install of over 250 1800mm Low Wattage LED tube lights throughout our factory - significantly reducing energy usage whilst maintaining a highly lit work space to ensure safety of our workforce.
Snelsons plans to continue what it is caling its "GoGreen" investment with further panels in the future, continued investment in creating more efficient plant and machinery and in-house training on how Snelsons staff can help to reduce our carbon footprint.

Snelsons are excited to announce that due to an upgrade from Autodesk, Snelsons can now receive drawings in any CAD format for processing. This expands our capabilities and means we can now accept file formats such as solidparts, saving the hassle for our customers converting these into the conventional formats for AutoCAD and Inventor.

With this new investment Snelsons will be able to handle longer lengths than before - increasing opportunities within the aluminium extrusion market place. The investment follows an extensive venture by Snelsons after the past two years, with new investment in plant and machinery along with our workforce.
